Sinn Féin Councillor, Thérèse Ruane has commended Ballina Town Council for The decision to erect a monument in memory of Dr. Kathleen Lynn, at her birthplace in Mullaghfarry, Killala.

The agm of Castlebar and District Council of Trade Unions will take place on Thursday. 10th May, in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar, at 7.30pm.

A number of prominent local and national speakers have been lined up for a public information meeting on Friday May 4th at 8pm in the Hotel Ballina, Foxford Road, on the EU Stability Treaty.

With the deadline to pay the Household Charge fast approaching, Castlebar Labour Councillor, Harry Barrett, has urged  homeowners to make sure that they are in fact liable to pay the charge. Homeowners must register and pay for the  charge by March 31st and Cllr Barrett has urged people to check to see if they are due an exemption.

On Monday, 6the February, a public seminar entitled European Economic Policy – What’s in it for Ireland? will be held at the Institute of Technology, Sligo.  Organised by the European Commission Representation in Ireland, it will feature presentations from Minister of State for European Affairs, Lucinda Creighton TD; Economics Editor of the Irish Times, Dan O’Brien; and resident adviser on Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission, Nigel Nagarajan. 

Mayo-born NUI Galway law lecturer, Donncha O’Connell, has been appointed by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, TD, to the new Legal Aid Board. Mr O’Connell comes from a well-known family in Swinford and his mother, Bríd, is one of the Hughes’s of Westport. The human rights campaigner recently contested Seanad election on the NUI panel.

Westport Radio, WRFM 98.2, is hosting a Budget Special this Sunday at 10am. The two-hour special will be broadcast live from the station’s James Street studios. A panel of representatives of the major political parties will debate the 2012 Budget and its local and national impact and answer listeners questions live on air.

Mayo Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane has hit out at Fine Gael and Labour for presiding over the handover of €700 million of taxpayers’ money to an unguaranteed senior bondholder in Anglo Irish Bank. As part of the party’s ‘Stop the Handover’ campaign, local Sinn Féin activists organised a picket outside An Taoiseach's Enda Kenny's Castlebar office.
