With the deadline to pay the Household Charge fast approaching, Castlebar Labour Councillor, Harry Barrett, has urged homeowners to make sure that they are in fact liable to pay the charge. Homeowners must register and pay for the charge by March 31st and Cllr Barrett has urged people to check to see if they are due an exemption.

Mayo native appointed to new Legal Aid Board
Mayo-born NUI Galway law lecturer, Donncha OâConnell, has been appointed by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, TD, to the new Legal Aid Board. Mr OâConnell comes from a well-known family in Swinford and his mother, BrĂd, is one of the Hughesâs of Westport. The human rights campaigner recently contested Seanad election on the NUI panel.

As part of the partyâs âStop the Handoverâ campaign, local Sinn FĂ©in activists organised a picket outside An Taoiseach's Enda Kenny's Castlebar office.
