Srahmore River, near Burrishoole in the Bangor fishery district, is one of 5 Irish rivers, which were closed in 2011, that will open for angling on a "catch and release" basis in 2012.

Cut in cost of salmon licence to boost Mayo tourism

Angling and fishing tourism interests in Mayo have received a timely boost with the news that the cost of the one-day salmon licence is to be cut by €12.

Minister for Natural Resources, Conor Lenihan T.D., has approved a suite of regulations and bye-laws that will govern the wild salmon fishery in 2011. These will come into effect from Friday, 1 January 2011.

Bilberry and Lannagh Angling Club held a pike angling competition on Sunday 21st. Angling was difficult with poor weather conditions. Despite this, 23 anglers took part and accounted for a total of 54 pike.

The catalogue of the Marine Institute’s Oceanus specialist research library of over 5,000 books relating to marine, natural and life sciences is now open to online viewing.

Anyone interested in the Institute’s extensive and historic collection of scientific literature relating to marine and freshwater resources can browse the content of the Marine Institute Library in advance of any visit to the Institute’s Library to view the material in person.

The collection, including some rare items dating back over one hundred years, was enhanced and added to by the successor agencies of the Fisheries Branch until the Fisheries Research Centre moved to Abbotstown in the 1970s and was incorporated into the Marine Institute in January 1996.

The Minister for Natural Resources, Conor Lenihan, has announced the start of a 30 day public consultation process on the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme Regulations for the 2011 season.

Bilberry and Lannagh Angling Club held its annual Pike Angling Competition in conjunction with IFI Ballina, with 34 rods taking part.

Pike anglers are reporting good catches on the lakes in the Castlebar area and sea anglers are still taking lots of cod and mackerel off the Mayo coast.

With a reported catch of over 12,000 salmon on the River Moy, now confirmed, it is the best year on the famous Mayo river since 1996.

The angling season comes to a quiet end on Lough Mask and Lough Corrib and the hope is that a good spawning season will ensure good fishing over the coming years.
