GIY Ballina organised a "meitheal" with other local community organisations to set up a community garden in the Parkside Area of Ballina as featured on Diarmuid Gavin’s Dirty Old Towns on RTE television in which waste ground was converted in to a workable community garden in 12 hours.
GIY Ballina was also involved in a Community Garden project at Enniscoe, and acted as mentors to Karen Garden, a community garden for the
Karen (Burmese) community living in the area. They are also in discussion with a local farmer’s market to sell member’s produce as a fundraising initiative for the group.
Speaking about the GIY Awards, Ray Colman, CEO of Woodie’s DIY said: “Woodie’s D.I.Y. is proud to be the main sponsor of the Grow Your Own
Gathering which recognises positivity and self-sufficiency in GIYers around the country. As Ireland’s largest Irish–owned DIY and garden centre chain, we are perfectly positioned to equip budding gardeners with the tools, experience and advice necessary to grow home-grown food successfully.”
