Minister Ring said the cycle network was funded under the Dept. of Transport, Tourism and Sport's 2011 Smarter Travel Funding Package and was part of the Department's Job Initiative investment which has provided employment as well promoting healthier, sustainable travel.

"Of course, the network is also for walkers and should make walking a lot safer and a lot mroe attractive for people of Ballina and also for the tourists who will be welcomed to the area", Minister Ring continued.

"I hope hope to see much greater numbers of children cycling to school and for many of the adults who have not cycled since their own schooldays, I say to you now is the time to get on your bike!"

Minister Ring's appeal for the people of Ballina and surrounding areas to use the new cycle network was also a theme taking up by both the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Austin Francis O'Malley, and Director of Services Ballina, Paddy Mahon.
