Renewable energy produced in North Mayo could help secure the Ireland's energy needs and also provide up to 10 per cent of Britain’s electricity requirement, say the developers of a wind and wave energy project at Glinsk mountain near Belderrig in North Mayo. The company behind the project, Organic Power Ltd of Skibbereen, Co Cork, says construction work on the scheme would create hundreds of jobs.

ESB International is planning to build Ireland's first full-scale ocean energy project off the west coast early next year and among the four sites being considered are two Mayo locations - the Mullet peninsula and Achill Island. The target date for generation is 2015, when the WestWave project could become northwest Europe’s first farm of its type, according to ESBI ocean energy project manager James Tedd.
