Top marks for enterprising St Muredach's College students

North Mayo’s youngest entrepreneurs were celebrating as the winners of the north Mayo Regional Student Enterprise Awards were announced at the showcase event in the Kennedy Glasgow House on the 10th of February. In all, 25 student enterprises participated with 12 taking centre stage at the North Mayo Final, which is organised by Moy Valley Resources and Mayo County Enterprise Board.

The North Mayo final was the culmination of a lot of hard work by the students and organisers which saw a number of workshops taking place with industry experts on finance, marketing and business planning.

The Senior Secondary Schools category was won by ‘VHIP’ from St. Muredach’s College Ballina, with Gaoth Úr and Mobile Menders also from St Muredach’s College taking the runner up prizes. The Junior Secondary Schools Prize was won by ‘DCS’ from St. Muredach’s College.

All the winners and the Recyclable Rain Water Project from St. Mary’s Convent were selected by the judges to proceed onto the Mayo Final which will be held at the end of February.

High standard

Peter Hopkins and Ann Marie Murphy from Moy Valley Resources paid tribute to the students and teachers for the high standard of projects this year.

Kevin Corrigan, CEO of Moy Valley Resources, who presented the overall senior winner said that Moy Valley Resources were delighted to be involved in the North Mayo competition.  He also said that the work and innovation from the students participating in the awards was astounding with projects ranging from green energy to smart phone applications.

Over 500 local students have been researching and running their own businesses in the Student Enterprise Programme since last September. 60 students competed at the North Mayo Final.

The 4 secondary schools which competed at this year’s North Mayo Student Enterprise Awards Final were: Gortnor Abbey, St. Patricks College Lacken Cross, St Muredeachs College and St. Mary’s Convent  of Mercy, Ballina.
