The lunchtime protest will take place at at 12:45 pm in the Market Square and will be followed by the handing in of a letter of protest to An Taoiseach’s constituency office.
A similar protest was held on November 2nd 2011 in Castlebar when the government handed over €715 million to unsecured Anglo bondholders.
Said Cllr Cllr. Thérese Ruane: "On Wednesday 25th of January 2012, the Fine Gael/ Labour Government is going to hand over €1.25 billion to yet another unsecured, unguaranteed Anglo bondholder. The State has promised to pay Anglo Irish Bank €3.1 billion on the 31 March next.
"A €1.25 billion saving could mean, no household charge, no cuts to community projects, no septic tank charge, no cuts to education, health etc. Such cuts are dividing our society and this Government is continuing the failed policies of Fianna Fáil demonstrating that those who have control of our national purse strings have chosen to protect the ‘haves’ in our society, leaving the ‘have-nots’ to fend for themselves.
"We in Sinn Féin oppose this outrageous payout to unguaranteed, unsecured Anglo bondholders. As a nation, we have political choices. We can choose to pay billions to unguaranteed Anglo bondholders, or we can choose to protect families, low earners, public services and Irish businesses. We are calling on this government to put the needs of people above the demands of banks, élite bondholders and the IMF.
"We are inviting you to join in a ‘Stop The Handover’ lunchtime protest at the Market Square, Castlebar on Wednesday 25 January next at 12:45 pm and have your voice heard, to stop this outrageous handover and to demand that this government stops this sell-out of the Irish people."
Organisations and individuals intending to take part can contact any of the Mayo Sinn Fein representatives here for further details.
