Mayo Fine Gael TD, Michelle Mulherin, has welcomed the news that the closure of 12 beds at Ballina District Hospital has been averted following an agreement between the HSE and SIPTU that Home Help workers will carry out cleaning duties at the hospital.

An entire wing of the hospital was to shut down owing to staff shortages. HSE funding is in place and existing staff at Ballina District have agreed to change work practices to accommodate the new cleaning staff.

Said Deputy Mulherin: "I am delighted that a solution has been found that means the 12 beds that were due to be closed at Ballina Hospital tomorrow (Friday) will be saved and that patient care has won out.

"The severe financial constraints brought about by unprecedented economic difficulties means we have to work differently and be more responsive and flexible in the workplace and in particular in the delivery of our health service for patients on less money.

"I would like to compliment all concerned for finding a logical and reasonable solution to this problem," Deputy Mulherin added.
