Dipping and dosing, shearing and shepherds and plenty of Mayo rams and winning rosettes will feature this coming Thursday, October 20th on ‘Out and About in Ireland’ the Irish TV produced weekly show broadcast on SKY TV channel 201 at 9pm. This insightful and intriguing programme from Achill Island shines a spotlight on one of Ireland’s oldest and most traditional agricultural sheep shows.

Celebrating 25 years in existence, the Achill Sheep Show attracted competitors from all over the west of Ireland with exhibits and classes for rams, ewes, hoggets and lambs amongst the many judging categories.

“There is something about sheep farming that is magical and I am sure people will really enjoy this programme.  People that grow up around sheep keep that ‘grá’ with them forever.  It is in their DNA and genes,” commented sheep farmer and committee member Michael Tommy Ó Gallchóir.

The programme on Sky and Freesat this coming Thursday on channel 201 also delves into the community effort and camaraderie associated with the Achill Sheep Show.

“The Achill Sheep Show is a perfect example of rural Ireland at its best.  Our show this coming Thursday will give viewers a unique insight into the workings of rural Ireland.  We will be showcasing all the local handmade craft and artisan food producers from this region.  We have a feature on spinning, children’s art and even highlights from the potato peeling competition,” commented Mairéad Ní Mhaoilchiaráin the programme producer.

The Irish TV programme this week features well-known country and gospel singer and Achill native James Kilbane, however on this occasion he will be talking about his sheep farm and not his albums.  Local parish priest Fr. Michael Gormally, Pat Kilbane, Tomás Mac Shéain and Dermot Cooney are some of those interviewed for the programme.

The programme this Thursday will also feature a carnival street parade from Ballyshannon in Donegal, All-Ireland champion Wren Boys from Co. Clare and look at the ever contentious 2011 Presidential Race for Áras an Uachtaráin.

The entire show can be viewed on Skychannel 201 or on Freesat 403 this coming Thursday, October 20th, at 9pm, or alternatively you can watch the show online at www.irishtv.ie
