"At the moment there is a stretch of the route which requires the cyclist to move onto the main road. This particular area includes dangerous bends and has no lane for safe cycling especially if cycling with young children which is a major concern," Chairperson Tommy
English said.
"It is just a matter of time before a serious accident will happen. Public safety for all road users must be put first.
"Not only does it pose a threat to safety but the Greenway has proven to be very important to the local economy and such safety concerns do not help. We will push for this issue to be seriously considered by Mayo County Council as a matter of importance before summer 2012 when the tourism season recommences in the area," Mr English added.
Achill Young Fine Gael (YFG) is to launch a campaign to improve public safety on the Great Western Greenway Route between Achill and Mulranny at Tonregee.
