Parenting a child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is often associated with high levels of stress. In addition to the challenges that the disorder itself may present, parents can also face additional difficulties.

For example, struggles in accessing services or dealing with misconceptions in public because it is not a visible disorder.

Experiencing long-term stress can have an impact on health.

Research is being conducted in the school of Psychology in NUI Galway investigating the prevalence of stress among parents of children with ASDs (autism, Asperger’s and PDD-NOS) and the impact it has on the health and wellbeing of parents.

"We are currently looking for parents of children with ASDs aged 2-18 years to participate in this study.  The study will focus on the parents and no demands will be placed on the child.  The findings could have important policy implications in future," explains Ciara Foody, Ballina, a PhD in Psychology in NUI Galway, who is involved in the research.
