The Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Shane McEntee TD, today gave the opening address at the Annual Conference of the National Dairy Council. The Theme of the conference was ‘Unlocking Growth in Dairy’.

Ballina students honoured

St Mary's Secondary school students, Ballina, were among 12 schools that attended a special award acknowledging their ‘excellence in enterprise’, from An Taoiseach Enda Kenny at the Department of Education and Skills on Marlborough St. in Dublin.

Nottingham Irish Golf Society has donated €40,000 to Mayo General Hospital to purchase three new Renal Dialysis machines. These funds were raised at an annual golf fundraiser in memory of Padraic Sweeney, RIP, a native of Co Mayo and popular member of the Nottingham Irish Golf Society who died of kidney disease just before his 45th birthday.

Bonniconlon GAA Bord na nÓg held their annual presentation night in the Fr. Peyton Centre Attymass with Mayo senior football team captain, Andy Moran, as special guest. Andy conducted a training session on Moyvilla FC's astroturf for the young Bonniconlon U14 and U16 players before the presentation began. A huge crowd turned out and were treated to entertainment from the Bofield Band, and Della Ginley and her staff at the Fr. Peyton Centre provided a wonderful range of refeshments.

A trout salvage operation is being carried out by Inland Fisheries Ireland staff who are working tirelessly in an effort to remove the many fish which have become trapped in the drought hit Cong canal. The Mayo canal is the main spawning channel for the much sought after ferox trout.  The dry spell has resulted in a significant drop in water levels, and given the porous nature of the limestone within the canal, this happens at an alarming rate.

As Bealtaine 2012, Ireland's national celebration of creativity as we age, draws to a close in Mayo the final event in the Mayo County Council programme is ‘Blossoms in May’ which takes place at Lough Lannagh Holliday Village from 10.30am-3pm on Thursday 24th May. 

Funding to help Mayo women set up in business

Mayo Intercultural Action has secured further funding to continue its GROW: Women In Business Programme. The GROW programme - Growing  Real Opportunities for Women is an EU funded programme run by Mayo Intercultural Action, providing supports for women to set up their own businesses. Over the past two years, women from throughout Mayo have availed of training, mentoring and advice to support them to develop successful enterprises.

Over 250,000 camping and caravanning enthusiasts around Great Britain will read all about holidays in Mayo and the west of Ireland later this year in the popular Camping & Caravanning magazine.

Mayo County Council is turning to CCTV in a partnership to stamp out the scourge of boy racers doing donuts on public road endangering their lives and the lives of others. There is also the cost of repairing these junctions, it could be anywhere from €500 up to €1,000 or €1,200, depending on if a stop or yield marking needs replacement.
