Mayo teacher, Declan Askin, from St. Gerald's Castlebar, was presented with the Outstanding Volunteer Award at the national First Lego League Championships 2012, sponsored by SAP at the Radisson Blu in Galway at the weekend. Mr Askin was attending the awards with a group of Castlebar students who were competing.

His team last year won the title and represented Ireland at the global finals in St. Louis, U.S.A. and the went on to win “The Most Inspirational Team” award.

The St Gerald's students have since also won awards at The Young Scientist 2012.

This year’s winners were the termin8tors from Moycullen in Co. Galway and they will represent Ireland at the European finals in Germany in June.

The global theme for this year’s competition was food safety, and the “termin8tors” won with their project “Food Safety Buddy” - an educational app to help the user shop, store and prepare food safely. 23 teams from all over the country took part in this year’s final.

Speaking at the event, Bernard Kirk, Director of The Galway Education Centre who organised the event said: “We are very proud to be hosting The National finals of The First Lego League here in Galway again this year.

"We wish The Termin8tors the very best of luck – all the students who took part in the challenge this year were of an exceptionally high standard and the hard work they and their teachers put in was evident today”.
