Minister condemns killing of White-tailed Eagle in Mayo
The apparent poisoning of White tailed Eagle found on the shores of Lough Beltra in County Mayo has been condemned by Jimmy Deenihan T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The young Mayo eagle, which had been released in Killarney National Park in 2010, was carrying a satellite tag to track its movements, and when the tag showed the bird was not moving about, a search was carried out by National Parks and Wildlife Service staff and the Golden Eagle Trust.
Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has warmly welcomed the announcement by Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, Dinny McGinley T.D., of the allocation of €56,250 to replace and erect a new lighting system at Roonagh Pier, Louisburgh.
EirGrid plans to tap into Mayo’s renewable energy and create jobs
A plan to bring 21st century energy infrastructure to the West of Ireland has been launched by EirGrid at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD. By connecting the electricity generated by the region’s huge renewable energy resources, the Grid West project will facilitate significant job creation and investment as well as contributing to national recovery and growth.
All Mayo bathing areas meet EU water quality standards
The quality of bathing waters along Mayo's beautiful coastline meets EU mandatory standards and are rated among the best in Ireland, according to The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which has launched the report The Quality of Bathing Water in Ireland – An Overview for the Year 2011. All of the Mayo County Council designated bathing waters in the county have received 'Good' status as has Enniscrone in County Sligo.
Plan to develop Raheens Woods near Castlebar
Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the drawing up of a plan for developing Raheens Woods near Castlebar which will now be submitted to the Department of Agriculture for consideration under the Neighbourwood Scheme.
Salmon Weir Bridge design wins Galway firm top award
Galway consulting engineering firm, Ryan Hanley, has won a national award for its design of Ballina's showpiece Salmon Weir Bridge. Ryan Hanley is the 2012 winner of the Association of Engineers of Ireland, President’s Award for Excellence in Design. The award citation recognises “excellence in design of a structure which is particularly appropriate in its environment”.
Private water meter installation will save money and create jobs in Mayo
Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has said households in Co Mayo and across the country should be given the option of getting approved water meters installed themselves, instead of paying the exorbitant fee of €800 over 20 years. Deputy Calleary as also called on Minister Hogan to clarify if households in Co Mayo that already have water meters fitted will also be subject to the €40 annual charge.Â
€39,000 in funding for Mayo will help tackle litter and graffiti
Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring, has welcomed funding totalling €39,000 for County Mayo to help tackle the problem of litter and graffiti. The funding has been announced by the Minister for Environment, Phil Hogan, as part of the provision of more than €2 million in grants to local authorities nationwide.
Tidy Towns is helping to transform Ballinrobe into a green town
Ballinrobe Tidy Towns focussed on the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message during the month of March, encouraging residents of the lovely South Mayo town to minimise the amount of waste they produce. The message was promoted with a talk from Sharon Cameron, Environmental Awareness Officer Mayo County Council, and later the Tidy Towns had a float in the Ballinrobe St. Patrick’s Day parade, bringing their message to a wider audience.
Castlebar Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the recent works at Glenfort Housing Estate. Describing these developments as "very positive and not before time", she has complimented the council, the residents committee and the developer for working together to bring about these long promised works to make the estate a safer and better environment for residents.
