It is frustrating and disappointing that Mayo County Council failed to apply to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for funding for the development of a slipway at Kilcummin, according to Mayo Fianna Fáil TD, Dara Calleary.

“I raised the issue of funding for both Kilcummin and Killala Old Pier with the Minister in the Dáil last week and while I am pleased that a commitment has been secured for the repair of Killala Old Pier under the 2011 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme, I am extremely disappointed that Mayo County Council have failed to apply for funding under the same Programme for Kilcummin,” said Deputy Calleary.

“I welcome Minister Coveney’s commitment to make funding available to carry out necessary repairs to the Old Pier at Killala and I look forward to the local authority completing the works to ensure that the pier is safe,” he said.

“I am, however, dismayed that no application was made in respect of Kilcummin Slipway. A new slipway development has been proposed for some time.

There is a general consensus that the slipway is substandard and it’s proposed development has the support of the area elected representatives and the Kilcummin community.”

“I am now calling upon Mayo County Council to ensure that an application for Kilcummin is given priority in their application to the Department’s 2012 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme,” concluded Deputy Calleary.
