Speaking at the meeting local Sinn Féin Councillor Rose Conway-Walsh said: “Now is the time for people of Erris and Mayo to make a stand and fight back against the proposed cuts in education which will have devastating effects on the 19 National Schools in Erris and rural schools throughout the county.
"The social and economic cost of children not fulfilling their true potential and of children dropping out from the education system altogether has obviously not been given consideration by this Government.
“The inequality of these cuts being wielded on rural schools when €100 million a year is given to exclusive Private Schools and heads of universities are paid enormous salaries is exasperating. Whatever happened to ‘cherishing all our children equally’ as declared in the Proclamation.
“It is imperative that every man, woman and child who cares about the future of education in this country comes out to the Mayo Rally Against Education Cuts in Castlebar on Saturday, 25th February at 1.30pm,” Cllr Conway-Walsh added.
