It’s that time of year again when Cultural organisations and groups in Mayo are busily preparing to throw open their door to audiences who eagerly anticipate the delights that await on September 23rd. This year 25 cultural hotspots throughout county Mayo will be sharing and showcasing a wide variety of Cultural events on the  September 23.

The event began in 2009 and Mayo was the first county-wide Culture Night.

In the past five years Culture Night has become a national phenomenon and this year 30 regions around the country will participate in the national event.  The evening provides an opportunity for audiences, cultural organisations and groups alike to showcase and experience local culture while also being part of a national event.
The main focus of the evening will be on access, and participating venues will extend opening hours, organise events which are free of charge and open to the public.

This year Mayo is hoping to build on the success of last year’s event with an increase in the number of cultural organisations.

Busily finalising their programmes of activity for the night are Scoil Acla in Achill, Comhar Dún Chaocháin and Áras Inis Gluaire in Erris, Ballina Arts Centre, Ballina Library and the Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina, Ballinglen Arts Foundation in Ballycastle, Custom House Studios and BLINK Visual Arts Trail (10 visual art venues) in Westport, Linenhall Arts Centre and Artsquad in Castlebar, Claremorris CCÉ and Claremorris Open Exhibition, the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life in Turlough, Charlestown Arts Centre & the Nephin Blacksmith Revival Group in Lahardane.

Guided Tours

Planned activities range from family workshops, films, exhibitions, performances, craft displays, music sessions and workshops and guided tours of venues, talks, storytelling, poetry readings, open artists’ studios and much, much more!  With almost 70 free events taking place throughout the county and catering for all ages, there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy on Culture Night!

Mayo County Council Arts Office will be working in partnership with the local venues, Temple Bar Cultural Trust and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to bring the Culture Night initiative to Mayo.
