Walking enthusiasts will have a unique opportunity to explore the countryside off the Great Western Greenway this June bank holiday weekend at Burrishoole Walking Festival. For the past 25 years Burrishoole Walking Festival has been revealing a piece of hidden Ireland to local and international walkers. Established in 1987, the festival is organised by an enthusiastic bunch of local volunteers, with farmers swapping their wellies for walking boots to act as guides through lands that they know best.

There was a good turnout for the Gorta commemorative walk in Belleek Wood, Ballina, on May Bank Holiday Monday. The walk was part of the National Famine Commemoration events, which remembers all those who died during An Gorta Mór. Among the attendance were Mayor Peter Clarke of Ballina, Dara Calleary TD,  Ballina Town Clerk, Carmel Murphy, and Cyril Collins of the Belleek Wood Enhancement Committee.

Mayo schools will join thousands of students across Ireland this week who are putting plans in motion to take part in An Taisce Green-Schools’ National Walk to School Week 2012, which takes place from May 21st to 25th. Lots of schools in Mayo have decided to celebrate the week in their own unique way by creating special walking buses, participating in walking tours, walking fitness workshops, Park’N’Stride events and nature walks - with the ultimate aim of increasing the number of students who make the school journey on foot during the week.

Easter family fun at Ballycroy National Park

Ballycroy National Park Visitor Centre has organised loads of free Easter activities this year for both children and adults alike. The public are invited to take part in guided walks on the 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th of April at 12p.m. Kids activities include an  Easter Treasure Hunt on Easter Sunday all day and also Kids Plover Club on Tuesday 10th and Thursday 12th of April.

Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD was delighted to officially open the Kilmaine Village Loop Walk on Sunday, 26th February. The Kilmaine Village Loop Walk is a 1.5 km walk which has been developed by the local community.

Taoiseach leads Walk of Hope along Foxford Way

A large group of hardy souls braved the icy conditions Saturday morning to join An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD for the Walk of Hope in aid of Foxford's Hope House and organised by Foxford Ramblers. The walkers were on their way by 8am along the Foxford Way, a 16 mile route through spectacular mountain and bogland that loops its way through the Ox Mountains before finishing back in Foxford town.
